Alistair Darling attacks exporters for their high prices

Alistair Darling today hit out at British exporters for not cutting prices to boost trade with Europe.

The Chancellor said sales of UK goods overseas have not risen as much as hoped, given the fall in sterling. He blamed exporters for using currency fluctuations to increase profits rather than cut prices and drive an export-led recovery in the UK economy.

The pound has tumbled against the euro and the dollar but Britain still imports far more than it exports.

Darling said: "You can't blame everything on the sluggishness of our export markets. There will be questions as to just how much our exporters have been willing to take advantage of the fall in the price of sterling to drop their prices"
