Apple settles US lawsuit over e-book price fixing

The judge found Apple took part in a conspiracy to fight Amazon

Apple avoided a potential $840 million (£471 million) bill today as it settled a major lawsuit over e-books price fixing.

The iPads maker faced legal action from 33 US states and territories and a class action from consumers.

Last July, a federal court found Apple liable for colluding with five publishers after a separate non-jury trial in a case brought by the Department of Justice.

The judge found Apple took part in a conspiracy to fight online retailer Amazon’s dominance in the e-books market.

Apple is appealing that decision and today’s settlement is contingent on the outcome of that appeal.
