EE today became the first British mobile phone company to offer a “family” price package with a single bill for up to five users or devices in a move that it claims could save customers £38 a month.
The phone giant, which owns Orange and T-Mobile, said it would cut an average family of four’s mobile bill from £150 with four individual price plans to £112 for a “shared” family plan.
Chief executive Olaf Swantee said EE’s super-fast 4G phone network will also be available at “double speed” in 12 cities, including London, with an average speed of 24-30 Mbps — equivalent to fixed-line fibre broadband.
Such speeds are the fastest in the world and “technically not achievable by our competitors” in some UK cities because they do not have the available spectrum, said Swantee, who has already stolen a march on rivals by launching 4G before Vodafone and O2.
Swantee, who is eyeing a possible £10 billion stock market float for the company this year, said EE’s new services and products showed “clear differentiation in the UK market”. He added that any float “depends on our ability to demonstrate that we are developing innovation, showing innovation and monetising innovation”.
EE was a sponsor of last weekend’s Glastonbury Festival and Swantee said the arrival of 4G has led to a change in behaviour as there was a surge in fans uploading photos and videos.
