Greek leader Alexis Tsipras has flown into Berlin to plead with German Chancellor Angela Merkel for more cash for the debt-laden nation.

Tsipras’ visit comes after a stern warning from other European leaders to come up with plans for budget cuts and tax increases to unlock bailout cash.

Spain's economy minister, Luis de Guindos, was quoted this weekend as saying that that there will be no further payout until Greece fulfils its promise to implement reforms.

But the Syriza leader has complained bitterly over the European Central Bank’s limits on the ability of the Greek government to issue short term debt, and warned that looming debt repayments could be “impossible” to meet.

Greece won a four-month extension of its rescue loans last month after promising measures including a crackdown on tax evasion and corruption.

But its relationship with Germany has since become more fractious, leading to calls in Athens for war reparations from the country.

The FTSE 100 eased back today, slipping below the 7000 mark.

Greece’s benchmark cost of borrowing for 10 years ticked 14 points higher to 11.15%.
