The board of Rangers Football Club has been overhauled after shareholders voted to remove chief executive Derek Llambias and finance chief Barry Leach at an extraordinary general meeting.

Investors elected Dave King, the South Africa-based businessman with a 14.5% stake in the club and the man who called the meeting, to the board, along with Paul Murray and John Gilligan.

The new board then immediately appointed another shareholder, Douglas Park, to the board.

Many shareholders voted by proxy or by post because the meeting was originally planned to take place in London.

But the club was forced to hold the meeting at its Ibrox stadium, after two London hotels cancelled the club's bookings over fears their premises would be mobbed by angry fans.

Some fans took to Twitter to celebrate the outcome.

Ashley, who holds a 9% stake and also owns Newcastle United, has lent Rangers £10 million and has deals with its retail business.

Rangers' chairman, former City man David Somers and director James Easdale had already announced their departures.

Somers said at the time: "Friends warned me the world of football has different rules and codes of behaviour [than the City]. I now know that is a gross understatement."
