Vodafone in a new tax battle with India

Vodafone today described as “grossly unjust” a plan by the Indian authorities to tax retrospectively overseas transactions involving local assets from as long ago as 1962.

It said: “We are urgently considering a number of courses of action, both in India and internationally, in consultation with our advisers. we continue to discuss these issues with a wide range of stakeholders.”

It said it was not yet in a position to comment on the detail.

The mobiles giant won a five-year battle against the Indian tax authorities in January over a

$2.2 billion (£1.4 billion) claim.
