Waitrose is to open a record amount of selling space for a single month and create nearly 700 jobs in November as it continues to outperform the grocery market.

The supermarket chain, led by Mark Price, will have opened four shops by the end of this month in London, Vale of Glamorgan, Ipswich and Norfolk’s North Walsham, as well as extending a branch in Bath, to add 690 jobs.

Waitrose has increased total sales by 8% over the past 12 weeks and has grown its share of the grocery market to a record 4.7%, according to Kantar Worldpanel. The John Lewis Partnership-owned grocer’s latest Little Waitrose in Knightsbridge will be its 35th smaller store.

Its property and development director Nigel Keen said: “we are pleased to have been able to create a record number of jobs around the country this month.”
