Veteran City commentator, and long-suffering fan of relegated Fulham, David Buik, below, can stand it no longer: “I have mixed feelings about the way some of our players have performed on the World Cup stage.

“It is great to see the likes of Bryan Ruiz [Costa Rica] and Ashkan Dejagah [Iran] and Giorgos Karagounis [Greece] playing well for the respective countries, but why collectively could they not turn it on for Fulham last season?

“Dejagah was tolerable, though he did score a few fabulous goals, Ruiz was woeful, and Karagounis was just older than God!” There’s always next season.

Culture clash in Westminster

ITV made an odd call choosing to show the dead rubber England v Costa Rica on its main channel last night and relegating the enthralling Italy v Uruguay to its digital channel ITV4. But Parliament TV, which webcasts proceedings from West-minster, had an even greater conflict of coverage.

Live from the Wilson Room came Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney in front of the Treasury Select Committee, while over in the Grimond Room the Media and Sport Committee was questioning Lenny Henry on diversity within the BBC. No prizes for guessing which hearing the main television news channel chose to run.

Any Betfair regrets?

Incidentally Irish Betfair boss Breon Corcoran might just regret draping himself in the flag by offering money back to sportsbook customers as free bets if England lost. That’s a lot of free bets despite last night’s draw.
