Moneysupermarket’s sales fired on all cylinders last quarter as families went further to try to save the pennies.

The price-comparison website, known for its controversial television adverts and “you’re so Moneysupermarket” catchphrase, finished 2016 with a 20% boost to revenues.

A downward trend for its travel website, Travelsupermarket.com, was also reversed with revenues 21% higher.

Chief executive Peter Plumb, who stands down in April to be replaced by Mark Lewis, said it was “another good year”.

“Our technology, data and brand investment programmes are positioning the group to continue to lead the market,” he said.

Total group revenue for the three months ending December was £73.8 million. Full-year profits will be £108 million.

Insurance remained the cash cow, with revenue in the three months ending December £66.9 million, 30% up on last year.

It has attracted criticism for its advertising. The ads watchdog on Thursday said its promos featuring twerking bodyguards, builders and businessmen were the most complained about last year, clocking up 2491 complaints.

The Advertising Standards Authority said none were offensive.
