Pearson makes £80m move into India education

11 April 2012

Financial Times and Penguin publisher Pearson today continued its reinvention as the self-styled "world's leading learning company" with another significant acquisition in education.

Pearson boss Dame Marjorie Scardino paid $127 million (£80 million) for a 76% stake in Bangalore-based digital education firm TutorVista.

Scardino hailed the purchase as "the largest transaction in education in India by any company" and pointed out the Indian government spends $40 billion a year on education.

She has spent at least £600 million on acquisitions in education in the past nine months, focusing on emerging markets such as China, Brazil and India.
