Poland to act quickly to appoint new central bank governor

11 April 2012

Poland's acting President Bronislaw Komorowski wants to a new central bank governor quickly after the previous bank chief Slawomir Skrzypek died in Saturday plane crash.

"Quick decisions are needed in case of the central bank, because only the governor can convene the Monetary Policy Council meeting," Komorowski said. "It is absolutely necessary for this problem to be resolved quickly."

As acting president Komorowski can name the central bank head, to be approved by the parliament later on, but there are some doubts whether he should pick the governor before presidential election which are expected to take place in June.

Skrzypek was killed along with President Lech Kaczynski and many of Poland's top government and military officials when their plane crashed in thick fog near Smolensk in western Russia.

Skrzypek's deputy, Piotr Wiesiolek, took over day-to-day management of the central bank, but some MPC members said regulations and laws are not clear whether he is authorised to chair the key monetary policy meetings.
