Yoox Net-A-Porter steps up fight against sale of fur products

Ditching fur: Yoox Net-A-Porter has adopted a fur-free policy

Online luxury fashion retailer Yoox Net-A-Porter on Tuesday stepped up its bid to become fur free, in a move likely to help it win more customers who support animal rights.

Its formal adoption of a fur-free policy comes two months after an investigation discovered animal fur on products marketed as synthetic by stores including House of Fraser and Missguided.

Both companies have no-fur policies and vowed to investigate or engage with suppliers.

Yoox Net-A-Porter, born from the merger of Italy’s Yoox and rival Net-a-Porter in 2015, said at group level it has been phasing out selling fur products since last year, but has now announced the policy.

It also revealed it has joined the Fur Free Retailer Programme supported by the Fur Free Alliance, a coalition of animal protection organisations worldwide.

Matteo James Moroni, head of sustainability, said: “Our goal is to act as an industrywide catalyst for change.”

Animal rights campaign group Peta welcomed the news.

Elisa Allen, director of Peta said: "Compassion is clearly in fashion, and many designers and stores – including Net-A-Porter, Selfridges, and Liberty – have dropped fur in favour of sustainable vegan materials that look like the "real thing" without harming animals. .. Yoox's decision to ditch fur cements its place in the fashion industry, now and into the future."
