The Reader: Starmer must question PM over Sage advice

REUTERS
16 October 2020

At Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, Keir Starmer should have made the observation that the Government has consistently claimed that it is slavishly following Sage’s advice — clearly so that at some point in future it can sidestep responsibility for everything Covid-related should the situation become disastrous — yet the evidence shows that Sage’s recommendations are not being followed.

How many times has this happened in the past? Rumour has it that Dominic Cummings’s opinion overrides every other consideration.

The public need to know the truth, not misinformation from Boris Johnson.

Dear Linda

It is right to say that the public craves the truth yet has never felt more baffled and cynical about the Government’s handling of the pandemic.

Some of the endless changes in policy are apparently guided by the “official” science — although there are also plenty of noisy dissenting voices among the boffins — but others ignore it.

The hopelessly unfulfilled promises on implementing a “world-class” test and trace system, which was supposed to offer a route back to normal life by now, only adds to the growing impression that Downing Street has lost control.

Police mask-wearing on TfL

With some experts assigning the rise in Covid-19 cases to people not observing the rules, I’d like to say I’ve never seen a ticket inspector on a bus, Overground or Tube checking tickets or making people wear face masks. Every train I’ve caught I’ve noted between five and 10 adults not wearing masks.

There have been lots of threats of fines but there has been little action.
