A trio of dancers will waltz their way through Tate Britain as part of a new installation by Argentine artist Bronstein.

Historical Dances In An Antique Setting opens tomorrow and includes two huge structures in Tate’s grand Duveen Galleries overlaid with images from the building’s exterior, making it seem as if it has been turned inside out, acting as a backdrop for the dancers.

He said: “Grand architecture is one of the things I’m most interested in, so it was a rare opportunity to be able to create work in such a unique setting as the Duveen Galleries. The commission also presented a perfect and challenging opportunity to work with performance on a large scale.”

A group of dancers will take it in turns to perform the 15-minute piece, which will run continuously for six hours a day. The installation is the latest in a series of annual Tate Britain Commissions, supported by Sotheby’s, which focus on large-scale works created in the neo-classical galleries.

Bronstein is a former student of the Slade School of Fine Art and Goldsmiths college and now lives and works in London and Kent.

Alex Farquharson, Tate Britain director, said: “Pablo Bronstein’s work consistently makes for deliciously jarring encounters between past and present, and between art and society. It’s fantastic to see his work come to life in the aesthetic and institutional grandeur of Tate Britain’s Duveen Galleries.”
