Coming to a cinema near you...

High concept

Plotline A comic combination of road movie and boxing picture. Two past-it pugilists (Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas) are told they can be bottom-of-the-bill for a major-league bout, if they make it to Las Vegas. Though the guys are buddies, they're happy to fight each other. But will they get there in time?

Hand in glove Lolita Davidovich drives the boys to Vegas in her vintage convertible. More importantly, she provides the love interest: she's the current squeeze of Antonio's character - and Woody's ex.

Undefeated champ The film's writer/director is sports-movie supremo Ron Shelton (Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump). Despite his track record, he still finds that movie studios interfere too much. Unwilling to compromise, he produced this film independently.

Seeing stars The boxing world is represented by cameos from Mike Tyson and George Foreman, while Ron's old pal Kevin Costner also appears. Though not exactly the coolest guy in Hollywood, he's still less naff than one of the other walk-on stars, Rod Stewart.

Out and a bout A running gag is that Antonio's character might actually be gay. When they finally fight, and get concussion, Woody hallucinates beautiful women. Antonio hallucinates a naked man.

Verdicts 'Too raw for some audiences, but it does pack a punch' - LA Times. 'What is this, you might ask yourself, a beer commercial?' - Washington Post.
