Disney's dog goes walkies

10 April 2012

Those who think that Disney has found itself a new lease of life will be either disappointed or comforted by this doggie tale.

"There's no need to fear. Underdog is here," exclaims the leading character, a cute-looking beagle who, captured by a mad scientist (Peter Dinklage) is given the capacity to run like the fastest jungle beast, fly like Superman and talk like a human.

There is also a spaniel named Polly and a mastiff called Riff-Raff to entertain the kids, as Underdog saves Capitol City from anarchy and destruction.

With the help of CG effects, the pooches knock the humans, who include Jim Belushi, Jason Lee and Patrick Warburton, into a cocked hat.

The screenplay is terrible and the story cursorily worked out, which doesn't help the non-canines.

But this cartoonish farrago, based on an NBC television series, begun in 1960 specifically to help sell breakfast cereals, doesn't claim to be anything more than very simple fun.
