Now it's Phoenix Nights the movie

Peter Kay as Brian Potter

Comic Peter Kay wants to turn his hit TV sitcom Phoenix Nights into a movie

He is thinking about making a film about the lousy social club and its bad-tempered wheelchair-bound owner Brian Potter.

But the Bolton-born comic is afraid the big-screen version would be crushed at the box office by the Hollywood competition.

He told BBC 6 Music: "I'm thinking of doing a film of it but I don't know.

"They're alright these British films but if you open the same weekend as Tomb Raider you're knackered. So I might wait and see ...".

Kay, 32, who plays Potter, is also set to bring back the award-winning Channel 4 show for a third series.

But he said some of the cast, which has included resident MC Jerry St Clair and useless doormen Max and Paddy, will have to be "killed off".

The Perrier Award winner said: "It's one of those things where I'm just going to wait until the moment is right, and I've got enough funny stuff, and then off we go again ... Some of the cast will have to be killed off."

Kay found his way to the top of the UK music singles chart in March with Tony Christie's standard Is This The Way To Amarillo?

Phoenix Nights landed the title of fastest-selling DVD ever, but went on to lose the crown to The Office.

Kay was speaking on The 6 Music Selector on BBC 6 Music in an interview to be broadcast next month.
