Superb acting in Late Autumn

Unshowy: Late Autumn
10 April 2012

Another of Yashiru Ozu’s late masterpieces (1960), to be put beside Tokyo Story as a commentary on Japanese mores that surpass nationality and manage universal appeal.

Three ageing salarymen conspire to find husbands for their late friend’s widow and her daughter, deaf to the fact that neither wants to marry.

Superb acting and unshowy direction make this homely drama into a quiet tragedy.

"Life is simple," says one man. "It’s people who make it complicated."
