The Broken Hearts Gallery review: Droll rom-com will send you out beaming

Banter: Geraldine Viswanathan as Lucy and Dacre Montgomery as Nick
Charlotte O'Sullivan11 September 2020

If you saw the 2018 comedy Blockers, you already know that Geraldine Viswanathan is a comic genius who, though beauteous, doesn’t rely on her looks. Basically, the Australian is nothing like your average rom-com lead.

Lucy (Viswanathan) is a smart, ebullient gallery assistant who, after a painful breakup, attempts to spin heartache into career gold with the help of sweet entrepreneur Nick (Dacre Montgomery of Stranger Things). Director/writer Natalie Krinsky is best known for her work on Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy. Possibly because I’m addicted to both shows, the banter between Lucy and Nick was as welcome as a hug from a dear friend.

True, the film’s a tad dishonest. While Lucy behaves like a rich kid (even when she doesn’t have a job, she rents a huge flat and looks after a dependent), the movie insists she’s one of us.

Still, the performances and one-liners are so droll you’ll almost certainly come out beaming.
