On September 5 the Evening Standard launched the 2017 Vlogstar Challenge - in partnership with YouTube, the Jack Petchey Foundation and Media Trust - for young people to share their stories through video blogs.

The competition is open to schools and youth organisations working with 16 to 25-year-olds in London and Essex.

The competition will see more than 1,500 young people trained how to create, shoot and edit high-impact video blogs through free one-day workshops.

Participants will then be invited to submit their best vlogs into the competition and a panel of judges will select the winner next summer.

The winner will receive £2,000 for their school or youth organisation, production equipment worth £500, plus mentoring with an expert in YouTube’s new King’s Cross “Space”, featuring ultra-high definition cameras and 4K capabilities.

The ceremony for last year’s Vlogstar Challenge was held at Bafta headquarters in Piccadilly, where the winner was named as Abigail Holsborough, 23, who wowed the judges with her entry, Confessions of an Advertising Intern.

Miss Holsborough said: “I hadn’t really made any vlogs before entering the competition so winning was totally unexpected.

“I really enjoyed the process and have learnt so many new skills.

“I would urge all young people to have a go and get involved.”

Trudy Kilcullen, chief executive of the Jack Petchey Foundation, said “We know young people enthusiastically support their communities and are passionate about a wide range of issues.

“They don’t always get a platform but Vlogging on YouTube can give them the opportunity to amplify their voices and tell thousands of people about what matters to them.

“That’s why we have joined forces with Media Trust, YouTube and the Evening Standard again on the Vlogstar Challenge 2017.”

Caroline Diehl, chief executive of the Media Trust, said: “Young people are key to giving a voice to the issues and causes that charities support.

“This competition provides 16 to 25 year olds with the valuable media understanding and skills they need to find their voice and champion the causes that matter to them most.”
