Grayson Perry and Marina Abramović among 32 artists to sign manifesto to 'rebuild' mid-Brexit Europe

More than 30 top contemporary artists including Grayson Perry and Marina Abramović have signed a manifesto seeking to promote “shared European values” they claim are being eroded by populism and Brexit.

The United Artists For Europe manifesto has been written by French intellectual Bernard-Henri Lévy, who earlier this year produced a similar message endorsed by writers including Salman Rushdie, Ian McEwan and Milan Kundera.

Mr Lévy said: “The European identity that we share, from Dublin to Budapest, is also an artistic identity. Art is the cement of Europe...

"There is no border when it comes to art, especially in Europe, the homeland of great painters, sculptors and architects. This is United Artists for Europe’s aim: to show that through art and culture Europe can be rebuilt.”

The manifesto’s 32 signatories come from across Europe, and include English sculptor Antony Gormley and German photographer Juergen Teller. It has been produced by the Franco-British think tank Hexagon Society.

Signatories will auction off 30 of their own works on Monday to raise money for cultural projects, such as Artagon — a charity supporting the careers of emerging artists.

Works are expected to fetch up to £120,000 each at the auction held at Piccadilly’s Hotel Café Royal.
