One of the greatest Impressionist paintings in private hands is set to make a world record at auction.

This picture by Claude Monet dates from 1873, the height of the Impressionist movement. Such works are so rare it is thought it could surpass the £19.8 million mark set for a Monet a decade ago.

Le Pont Du Chemin De Fer A Argenteuil will be sold by Christie's in New York on 6 May - but goes on view at Christie's in London from tomorrow until Wednesday. Jussi Pylkkanen, of Christie's Europe, said: "There are a few Impressionist pictures from the 1870s in private hands. This is one of the best of them, if not the best. And the way the market is today, when you get a picture of this calibre coming up, a record price would make sense."
