Backstreet’s back, all right!

Everyone loves a comeback, so the return of the Nineties poster boys, a new album and world tour is sure to set a legion of world-weary hearts aflutter. Older, wiser and boasting a litany of oh-so quotable lyrics on their latest venture, DNA (“Who are you, the sex police?” on single New Love is T-shirt material in the making), we caught up with AJ McLean to establish what they’ve learned. Twenty-year challenge, anyone?

The strangest thing that’s ever happened on stage?

Back in the day we used to play pranks on each other on stage. That led to some interesting experiences, looking over and seeing Nick Carter reacting to tiger balm in his underpants.

The most surprising thing a fan has done?

You really do experience surprising things when you’re in a boyband. Girls would sneak their way onto the floor at the hotel, slip notes under your door, everything you can think of. Once I signed a pregnant woman’s belly and her baby kicked at that exact moment.

The best boy bands of all time

Your guiltiest pleasure?

I don’t feel guilty about it but I have seen and can quote every episode of Friends.

Your biggest regret?

Well I definitely regret recording If You Want It To Be Good Girl (Get Yourself A Bad Boy). Why did we think that was a good idea?

Who is your hero?

My mother, Tim Burton, who’s an absolute genius, and Stan Lee.

Whose hero are you?

I’d like to think my girls, but Ava might be more into Doc McStuffins right now.

Best fact you’ve learned this year?

I’ve taken a social media break. I can now be more present in every moment with my family and as an artist. You never know how much time you really spend scrolling on your phone until you look up and see what you’ve missed.
