Five tracks to hear this week (July 20-26)

Remix and match: Alt-J

Not long after frontman Brett Anderson published his autobiography, Suede have shared another new song from their eighth album, on the way in September. Don’t Be Afraid If Nobody Loves You has much of the gritty drama of the band’s early work.

Alt-J’s last album only had eight songs on it. Now the art-rock band have come up with 11 more on Reduxer, a collection of hip hop-style remixes of their recent work that’s coming in September. It includes contributions from Little Simz, Pusha T and GoldLink, while Danny Brown is on the version of Deadcrush that was revealed this week.

Toronto band Metric will be back with a new album in September, are supporting Smashing Pumpkins on tour and return first with a tough guitar tune, Dark Saturday, which would have fitted right into the early Nineties rock scene.

This week singer-songwriter Cat Power set the scene for her first album in six years with a track that’s just over a minute long. Wanderer won’t be out until October but the introductory music, consisting only of folksy, harmonising voices, will make many wish autumn would hurry up and get here.

Meanwhile, Australian folk duo Luluc are singing about Spring on the opening track on their beautiful, newly released album Sculptor – more lustrous harmonies to get quietly excited about.
