Janet Jackson - Unbreakable, album review: 'hangs together surprisingly well'

R&B legend makes up for lost time in first new album for seven years
'Sounds great': Janet Jackson makes a welcome return with her latest album

Janet Jackson hasn’t released an album in seven years, and hasn’t had a big hit single over here in twice that, so she’s trying hard to make up for lost time.

Janet Jackson - Unbreakable

Unbreakable weighs in at a close-to-indigestible 19 tracks, though with the smooth production work of her teammates from her best old material, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, it hangs together surprisingly well.

The thumping soul rock of Gon’ B Alright doesn’t fit, and nor does the rumbling house of BURNITUP! with its Missy Elliot cameo.

That said, the 49-year-old’s voice remains high and clear and less showy than some of her peers, so she sounds great on the simple piano ballad After You Fall and the hopeful soul of Broken Hearts Heal.
