Kodaline’s new single was originally just meant to be a wedding present for a close friend, singer Steve Garrigan has revealed.

Garrigan, pictured, said: “It’s a song that we never thought we would put on the album. I wrote it for a friend who’s been working with us for 12 years.

“He got married last year. I didn’t get him a present, so I wrote him that song instead. Like an idiot, I didn’t write it until the night before.”

The band played The One for sound engineer Cameron Young and his bride the following evening.

“It was pretty nerve-racking. It was the most important day of their lives, but it worked out well and the two of them are over the moon.”

The Irish group did not think they would perform the song in public again.

However, Garrigan added, when they were in Canada two weeks later “a guy asked us before the show if he could propose to his fiancée on stage. Luckily she did say ‘yes’ and on the spur of the moment I played the song.”

The proposal inspired two fans to cover The One and put the video on YouTube. “We didn’t think of putting the song on the album until we heard someone covering it. And we thought, ‘Actually, it’s quite good,’ ” Garrigan said.

The One is due for release on April 12.
