Virtually famous: L Devine

David Smyth7 June 2019

L Devine already had to change her stage name from her real one, Olivia, because she shares it with a porn actress, so she isn’t doing her Googleability any favours by calling her new single Naked Alone.

It’s a sparky, funky pop track about feeling lonely and horny after moving down to London from Whitley Bay to pursue a songwriting career.

The shift south had advantages for her pop prospects if not her romantic life. She signed a major label record deal with Warner, home of Dua Lipa, who had a similar slow-burning approach to chart stardom. Two EPs have appeared so far, Growing Pains and Peer Pressure, in the Novembers of 2017 and 2018, earning her attention from influencers and, last month, an invite to play on Annie Mac’s stage at the Great Escape festival.

In her small back catalogue to date there are numerous songs as smart and catchy as anything in the top 40 – her early piano ballad Panic in particular sounds like a hit to me – so it’s surely only a matter of time before she’s the top Devine in the search results.

Hear for yourself at her first London headline show next week.
