Swede wins Python role

On parade: army officer Nino Soderquist beat 1,000 rivals

A Swedish army lieutenant and rock singer has won the chance to be the new leading lady in Spamalot.

Nina Soderquist, 35, beat 1,000 rivals in a Swedish TV talent show to get the chance to make her West End debut.

She now has a week's rehearsals before she opens as the Lady Of The Lake in the musical adapted from the Monty Python film Monty Python And The Holy Grail.

Speaking after arriving in London following her victory on Saturday night, Soderquist said: "It's crazy. I'm happy and I'm excited and I'm tired.

"I've got a lot to learn in a short period. It's a new world for me but I love Monty Python and their crazy humour."

The singer, who has worked with bands from Toto to the Bee Gees, once entertained the troops in Afghanistan, which is how she earned her army commission.
