It’s the moment that F Scott Fitzgerald fans dream of – you are cordially invited to Jay Gatsby’s party at Wilton’s Music Hall.
Where? Only the world’s oldest surviving grand music hall that’s just the ticket for holding the lavish soiree imagined by the American writer. Directed by Peter Joucla, the Tour de Force theatre company is staging an immersive adaptation of Fitzgerald’s most iconic novel, The Great Gatsby, at this hidden architectural jewel in Wapping.
Published in 1925, just before the collapse of the US stock exchange, Fitzgerald’s novel is a graphic portrait of the roaring jazz era in all its decadence and excess – with Gatsby’s rise and fall becoming perhaps the most famous cautionary tale about the American dream.
You won’t just watch the party play out on stage, you’ll be part of the party. As befits his guests, you’ll be expected to don your finest 20s threads while you drink in the live jazz, sip moonshine cocktails like Zelda Fitzgerald, admire the flapper dancers and foxtrot around with your beau among the bootleggers and millionaires. Wilton’s will be transformed into a 1920s speakeasy recreating all the glitz and glamour of that golden age for you to enjoy before, during and after the performance.
For those who really want to get into character, whether it’s the heartbreakingly pretty Daisy Buchanan or the dapper Jay Gatsby himself, there will be a dressing up box crammed with pearls and feathered headbands for your pleasure.
