Family sitcom Outnumbered is set to return for a one-off special on the BBC.

The largely improvised show, focusing on couple Pete and Sue Brockman and their three young children, won a huge fan-base for its attention to detail around the absurdities of life as a parent, and ran for five series between 2007 and 2014.

The show’s writing duo Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin are ‘working on new ideas’ for a special episode which could air at Christmas.

Speaking on FUBAR Radio, Hamilton said: “We hope to visit the family for a kind of one-off. Me and Guy, on our wall, in our office, we have a list of ideas we are trying to work out.”

He also spoke about the issues that sometimes arise in making a one-off episode for the Christmas period.

“We've done a few Christmas specials, but you kind of disappear in a big gap of Christmas programming,” Hamilton explained. “We're kind of inclined to do it somewhere else if we can.”

The three child actors are now considerably more grown up, with Ramona Marquez now aged 14, Daniel Roche aged 16, and Tyger Drew-Honey aged 19.

No doubt the special episode will throw plenty of teenage problems at the Brockman family.
