After the confirmation last night that Chris Evans will be taking over from Jeremy Clarkson as the lead host of BBC’s Top Gear, speculation now moves to who will be joining him.

While it was reported that Richard Hammond and James May turned down a £4 million offer to remain on the show following Clarkson’s forced departure, there is now new hope for fans that James May could be involved.

Chris Evans spoke about his Top Gear appointment on his Radio 2 breakfast show, explaining that he contacted the former hosts after he accepted the position.

“James called me back straight away,” Evans said. “We had a chat, we are going to meet up today or tomorrow to talk about things. Who knows what might happen there?”

However, Evans also explained that one of the things that pushed him towards accepting the role was the news that Hammond and May would not be returning, claiming that he “didn't want to be a pawn in a chess game involving three of my friends” while the old hosts were still rumoured to be involved.

While Evans’ “chat” with May could be a sign of his return in some capacity, it could also just be a chance for the new host to gain some advice from one of his predecessors.
