The annual summer riot of circus, burlesque, cabaret and comedy that is London Wonderground returns to the Southbank for five fruity months starting from tonight, May 5.

Now in its fifth year, the season promises a freaky cavalcade of weird and wonderful performances centred around the 1920s Berlin-inspired big top, the Paradiso Spiegeltent. Expect plenty of shock and phwoar from world famous drag artists, line-ignoring comedians and wince-inducing, triple-jointed acrobats.

Alongside these distinctly adult evening shows, there’s also plenty for kids and families during the day and at weekends.

London Wonderground takes up its usual residence just west of Hungerford Bridge alongside the Coney Island bar, an atmospheric drinking spot where you can mingle with the performers before and after the shows. Nearby is the Star Flyer, a gut-churning 60-metre high carousel with great rotating views of London. Also part of the same complex is the massive upturned purple cow known as the Udderbelly, another stage for cutting-edge comedians.
