The traditional festive sprout is receiving a revamp this year and what better way to do that than coat it with a light, crispy fried batter.
Vegetarian friendly, a 240g box will cost just £3 and will be available in stores from Monday December 9.
Tesco’s 2019 festive menu also features delights like mozzarella and pesto arancini balls, prawn roses, chorizo pigs in blankets and a stuffing wreath surrounded by pigs in blankets with a cranberry compote.
However, despite brussels sprouts now being available in fried form, the extreme summer weather from June and July could mean there is a short supply of regular brussel sprouts for Christmas this year.
According to The British Growers Association, the heavy rains in June followed by July’s heatwave has affected fields in the UK and Europe.
Jack Ward, chief executive of the British Growers Association told Metro: “With sprouts, you are trying to hit peak production around Christmas which is why it’s so difficult.”
Ward also warned that the UK could be facing a farming crisis if the trend of freezing winters and summer heatwaves continue.
Sprouts have been part of the traditional British Christmas feast since the end of the nineteenth century, food historian Angela Clutton told inews, as it was then that sprouts became widely available just as the modern ideas of a Christmas ‘feast’ was being invented.
