Rising star baker shows you how to bake the perfect Mother's Day cake

Mother’s Day is tomorrow and if you’ve forgotten about the gift but want to make more of an effort than buying a bunch of flowers on the way, why not bake a cake?

Georgia Green has made cakes for the likes of Cara Delevigne and Suki Waterhouse, and now she’s showing you how to make your own show-stopping creation.

In the video above Georgia – the Mary Berry for millennials – details how to put together a cake your mum would be proud of.

Ingredients

250g butter

250g caster sugar

1tsp vanilla paste

4 eggs

250g self-raising flour

For the buttercream icing

500g icing sugar

150g butter

60ml milk

1tsp vanilla paste

Food colouring

Start with 250g of melted butter and add 250g of caster sugar

Whisk together a teaspoon of vanilla paste and four eggs

Fold in 250g of self-raising flour

Divide the mixture into two six inch tins

Bake at 180C (fan oven) for 40-45 minutes, at 35 minutes check the cake and rotate

Once cooked, leave the sections to cool

For the buttercream, sift 500g of icing sugar

Combine 150g of butter, 60ml of milk and a teaspoon of vanilla paste

Beat the mix until light, white and fluffy

Once cool, cut the cake into two layers

Build a cake tower using buttercream between each layer

Smother the whole cake in buttercream, and refrigerate until the cream hardens

Use food colouring to create four shades of pink buttercream, and slather the cake in different shades up until the top tier

Cover the top layer in white buttercream

Use a scraper or pallet knife to smoothen the surface, creating an ombre effect

Finish your maternal masterpiece with decorations of your choosing
