Five things Fay Maschler ate this week

Our restaurant critic sits outside Opera Tavern and indulges in some home roasted poulet de Bresse
17 July 2013

1. At a soft opening at Paesan in Exmouth Market, where cucina povera is "the way of life", Calabrian trippa and steak ragu, chilli and pecorino. Still chewing.

2. After seeing the transcendent Simon Russell Beale in Pinter’s The Hothouse, lacquered pork rillons with celeriac and apple remoulade at Terroirs.

3. Sitting outside Opera Tavern, eating the Iberico pork and foie gras burger, natch, but also chargrilled chicken with black farro, roasted datterini and tonnato sauce.

4. An enlivening breakfast of sweetcorn, feta, green chilli & curry leaf waffles with smoked bacon at The Modern Pantry, where service is not quite as spirited as the menu.

5. Salt is salt, right? Wrong. Piran sea salt Fleur de sel imported from Slovenia (available at Selfridges) is the most fitting seasoning for the royalty among poultry, a poulet de Bresse, roasted at home.
