Safety tips

You don’t need any special skills to use a Santander Cycle in the capital, but it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with these key safety tips before setting out for the first time.

1) For your safety always cycle on the left and overtake on the right. Indicate well in advance before you change lines or make a turn

2) Keep your distance from HGVs, buses and other large vehicles that might have trouble seeing you in their mirrors. Bikes are allowed in bus lanes, but look out for buses pulling in and out of bus stops

3) Be sure to stop at red lights and for pedestrians at zebra crossings

4) On narrow roads, position your Santander Cycle centrally where possible, cycling a car door’s width away from parked cars. Keeping central means you’ll have room to manoeuvre safely around any potholes or uneven road surfaces

5) Don’t use headphones or a mobile phone while cycling – it is best to pull over to answer a call or check your route

6) Bright clothing will make you easier for motorists to spot in low light, and reflective strips or clothing are a good idea too, especially when cycling at night

TfL strongly advises you consider wearing a helmet. If you want to wear one, make sure you buy one that fits securely so when you tighten the strap firmly under your chin, the helmet doesn’t shift around

You don’t need to worry about bike lights as Santander Cycles are all fitted with lights that turn on automatically as you pedal. Before hiring a bike, however, you should adjust the seat and check the tyres, brakes and bell.

Check the Transport for London website for more information on cycling safety. Another alternative is to get in touch with your local council to book a free or subsidised cycle training session – most London boroughs offer them for adults and children.
