The Essex house, where Princess Margaret and Group Captain Peter Townsend met regularly during the Second World War, is on the market.

Played by Ben Miles — seen right with Vanessa Kirby as Margaret — in new Netflix drama The Crown, Townsend was Equerry to King George VI, but was better known for his doomed romance with the Princess.

The couple would visit friends at the five-bedroom Grade II-listed house in the pretty village of Steeple Bumpstead.

The comfortable family home, with a 28ft drawing room and a two-storey brick outbuilding, is for sale at £685,000 with Cheffins.
