WHERE
The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, Fortnum & Mason, 181 Piccadilly, W1

WHAT'S ON THE MENU
Choose from  85 varieties of tea, including 30 rare and seasonal single estate “whole leaf” teas from tiny plantations from China to Malawi, including a Darjeeling from the gardens of Tregothnan just outside Truro in Cornwall. Expert “tearistas” are on hand to offer advice.

And to accompany your cuppa, an endless supply of dainty finger sandwiches; perfectly baked scones with clotted cream and jam; and a seductive selection of cakes from the patisserie - or simply stop the passing cake carriage and point.

Vegetarians, fussy eaters and those with allergies are all well catered for.

THE EXPERIENCE
No one does afternoon tea better than Fortnum’s, which has been selling tea in Piccadilly since 1707. Its elegant trademark eau de nil is everywhere in the fourth floor Salon, a tranquil retreat from the busy department store below. A pianist soothes shoppers’ jangled nerves while table staff patiently guide the daunted through the extravagant tea menu.

INSIDER TIP
Starve yourself all day, ask for a table by a window and allow two hours to defeat your cake stand.

PRICE
£40 or £44 per head depending on the rarity of the tea you choose.
