A&E forced to shut by ‘suspicious’ fire

13 April 2012

A Croydon hospital's accident and emergency department has been forced to close after a fire broke out in the early hours of this morning.

Police are treating the blaze at the Mayday hospital as suspicious and have launched an investigation.

Ambulances are being diverted to other nearby hospitals, putting extra pressure on all local A&E departments.

All planned surgery and out-patient appointments in the London wing of the hospital have been cancelled.

A spokesman for campaign group London Health Emergency said: "This is going to put huge pressure on services in the whole of south London."

The blaze broke out in the hospital's MRI department at 3.30am and 30 patients had to be evacuated. No one was hurt.
