Ambitions for the new academies

  • Academies are publicly funded independent schools established in disadvantaged areas either as new schools or to replace failing schools.
  • The Government plans to open 200 nationwide by 2010, with 60 of those to be built in London.
  • Each academy costs about ?25 million - roughly double the cost of a comprehensive.
  • For ?2 million, a sponsor can appoint governors and senior managers and influence lessons within the national curriculum.
  • There are 17 academies already open. London has 10: the Business Academy, Bexley; Greig City Academy, Haringey; Capital City Academy, Brent; the West London Academy, Ealing; the Academy at Peckham, Southwark; City of London Academy, Southwark; London Academy, Barnet; Mossbourne Community Academy, Hackney; Stockley Academy, Hillingdon; Lambeth Academy, Lambeth.
  • Academies are planned for Croydon, Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney, Hillingdon, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lewisham, Southwark, Waltham Forest, Wandsworth and Westminster.
