Artificial life 'by end of the year'

Scientists are only months away from creating the first form of artificial life, it has been claimed.

American scientist Dr Craig Venter is working with Nobel winner Hamilton O. Smith to create bacteria.

He said: "Assuming we don't make any errors, I think it should work and we should have the first synthetic species by the end of the year."
