Assembly attacks Boris Johnson over 'loan shark' adverts

Boris Johnson was today under pressure to publish a tough code of ethics for sponsorship and advertising on London's transport network.

The Mayor came under fire for accepting sponsorship from a "legal loan shark" firm for free travel on New Year's Eve.

An official motion by the London Assembly branded the decision to sell billboard space on Tubes and buses to Wonga.com, which offers cash at rates up to 2,600 per cent, "irresponsible". Its posters are still being displayed.

Labour's Jennette Arnold said: "Mr Johnson should publish a robust code of ethics that forbids advertising for this type of service on the network."

A spokeswoman for the Mayor said: "Transport for London already has a well-established policy governing adverts on its services."
