Becks set to quit Spain

David Beckham said today he could quit Spain because his children had been harassed by the paparazzi.

The England captain, who has been playing for Real Madrid for the past two seasons, said he was now seriously thinking about his future.

He claimed sons Brooklyn and Romeo had been hounded by paparazzi in two separate incidents over the past fortnight.

Brooklyn, six, was "chased" by photographers into a soccer school and Romeo, two, was pictured inside his nursery playing with other children.

Speaking today ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland, Beckham admitted: "I don't know what to do. A couple of incidents over the last two weeks have made me think very carefully.

"They have happened when my children have not been with us but going to school. The first incident happened when Brooklyn-was going to a football school. Both Victoria and I were working at the time and he was chased into the school by paparazzi.

"That, for me, is crossing the line " Beckham, whose third son Cruz was born a month ago, then went on to describe a second incident, also in Madrid, involving younger son Romeo.

"He was in nursery school when the paparazzi were taking pictures of him playing with the other kids. Again I think that is crossing the line. Both Victoria and myself have had to live in the limelight for many years and we accept it - but this is different. "If I give in to these people then they have won. But I just don't know what to do about it.

"I love playing for Real Madrid but this has not happened anywhere else to me except in the United States on one occasion."

Beckham's comments will immediately lead to transfer speculation with Premiership leaders Chelsea the favourites to secure his signature if he returns to England.

Manager Jose Mourinho said in January: "David Beckham is someone I respect as a man and as a player."

Beckham, 29, would have difficulty moving back to former club Manchester United after falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his estimated £130,000-a-week salary may be too much for Arsenal's wage structure.

Beckham's time in Madrid has not been a happy one. His form on the pitch has been patchy while a much publicised alleged affair with his former assistant Rebecca Loos rocked his marriage and destroyed overnight his image as a clean-cut family man.
