Football legend George Best was today arrested after an allegation of assault.

Best walked into Staines police station in Surrey at lunchtime to be
interviewed about an allegation brought by Vicky Pope that he attacked her as she tried to stop him getting into his ex-lover Gina's Devivo's home in Ewell, Surrey on Tuesday.

Best looked relaxed as he drew up in a Skoda taxi followed by the press.
But shortly afterwards it emerged Best had been arrested and was being held in custody inside the police station.

A spokeswoman for Surrey Police said: "A 59-year-old man was today arrested bySurrey Police officers following an allegation of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a 34-year-old woman.

"The offence is alleged to have taken place at an address in Ewell, Surrey on June 7.

"The man is currently in custody at a Surrey police station."

Earlier today, Best's agent Phil Hughes said the formerfootballer "categorically" denied any allegation of assault.

Ms Pope told the Daily Mirror Best had punched her in the neck as she attempted to stop him entering her friend Miss Devivo's home.

She told the newspaper: "It was absolutely terrifying and totally shocking."
