Blunkett praises police

13 April 2012

Home Secretary David Blunkett praised today's anti-terrorist raids as a "first class police and security operation".

It was a "timely reminder" of the threat of terrorism to the UK.

In a statement, Mr Blunkett said: "I would like to record the Government's thanks to all those from the police and security services who work so tirelessly and bravely on our behalf.

"While it is for the appropriate authorities to decide what action is taken against those individuals arrested today, the fact that such action was felt necessary is a timely reminder that the UK and its interests abroad remain a target.

"We have always been clear with the people in the UK that we face a real and serious threat and have never disguised the fact that this threat could manifest itself in any number of ways.

"The protection and safety of the public is the first duty of Government and today we can be thankful for a first class police and security operation.

"The Government remains determined to provide the laws, money and resources needed to combat terrorism.

"It is important that people remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police through the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.

"It is also important that we carry on with our lives as normal while remaining alert to the possible threat."

Scotland Yard Commissioner Sir John Stevens also commended the forces involved.
He said: "Today's operation was possible because of the close working relationships between the Met's Anti Terrorist Branch, the Security Services and our neighbouring police forces."

Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, praised police and security services but urged all people to keep their eyes open.

"The police are the front line in guarding against a terrorist attack. But all Londoners and all of London's communities have their part to play in the vigilance needed to foil the terrorists," he said.

"London's communities stand shoulder-to-shoulder against the threat of terrorism and today's arrests underline the importance of working together.

"I want to thank the police for their excellent work today. I urge all Londoners to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious to the police."
