Boris tells embassies to pay up over congestion charge

The Mayor has demanded that embassies in London pay congestion-charge fines
12 April 2012

Boris Johnson is being pressured to demand payment from embassies owing fees and fines for the congestion charge.

A motion agreed by the London Assembly urged the Mayor to write to the head of state for each country that refuses to pay the charge and ask for an explanation.

At least £28million is owed to Transport for London by countries that insist the charge is a tax, and therefore they do not have to pay.

The US is the worst offender, owing £3,446,520, but more than 50 other embassies refuse to pay.
