Car crash kills three students

Colin Adamson12 April 2012

A London university is in mourning for three first-year students killed when their car was in a horrific collision with a taxi.

University of Greenwich student Amie Williams, 19, from Bethersden, Kent, died with her boyfriend James Self, 19, from Norwich, and their best friend Ryde Hutchinson, 18, from Gillingham.

A fourth friend was airlifted to hospital and is "critical", after their Fiat Seicento appeared to spin out of control on Blackheath Hill.

James's father Michael, 58, said today: "They were all the best of friends and it is so sad. They seemed to spend every waking moment in each other's company.

"James started going out with Amie when they met at university in September.

They used to come to see us in Norfolk quite often.

"We are coping but it is so hard for me, my wife and his older sister Georgina. James was popular and known locally for sailing and working in the local pub."

Staff and fellow students say they are devastated by the tragedy. Dr Jane Longmore, head of the school of humanities, said: "James was a bright student who was extremely popular with students and staff. He will be greatly missed."

Kent policewoman's daughter Miss Williams, a keen snowboarder, was studying law. Senior Academic Mark Pawlowski said: "She will be remembered for her openness and cheerfulness, which made her stand out. I know from the reaction of her friends and classmates, who were devastated by the news, how much she will be missed."

Ryde was a BSc computing science student. His lecturer Dr Kate Finney said: "Ryde was very committed to doing well on the course and making the best of his talents.

"I shall miss his sense of humour and the contributions he made to the class."

Scotland Yard said: "We have launched an investigation into the accident. An inquest has been opened.

"The accident happened just after 11pm on Monday night when a Fiat Seicento was in collision with a black cab. Two people died at the scene and another died later in hospital."
