Carry on up the Junction: as Clapham gets stuck in the great clear-up spreads

Clean sweep: Clapham residents and business owners pitch in. Peter Dobson with café owner Hakan Waylagul in Clapham

Shopkeepers and residents across London took to the streets for the second day today to clean up and help local businesses to reopen.

Artist Dan Thompson, 37, who launched the campaign on Twitter, said: "It's just amazing - I originally thought we might get 10-20, then photos came in of hundreds."

Singer Kate Nash and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson were among the celebrities to turn out, along with Boris Johnson, who was in attendance with 500 volunteers in Clapham yesterday. By the evening, the campaign had also taken hold in Brixton, Croydon, Lewisham, Peckham, Isle of Dogs, Camberwell, Ealing, Bethnal Green, Bow, Hackney, Camden and Chalk Farm.

Today shops that remained closed had messages of support pinned to the boards put up to protect them.

At ransacked and vandalised Jack's café in Lavender Hill, Peter Dobson, 26, said: "Everyone is getting together, it's not just a few people -it's the whole community."

Ulas Al, 34, who runs the business said: "Our customers are our friends and their help has been invaluable."

Kirsty Gosling, 26, of Clapham, who joined in her local clear-up after work yesterday, said: "A lot of people with businesses thanked us."
