Chinese drunk kills 11 in digger rampage

12 April 2012

A drunken Chinese man driving a digger killed 11 people in an hour-long rampage.

Li Xianliang, 38, first killed a customer at the coal depot where he worked in Hebei province's Yuanshi county then drove down a road, hitting cars, buses, motorbikes, lorries and shops, injuring 20 more.

Eight victims were killed instantly while the other three died in hospital.

He eventually stopped in a field and was subdued and arrested. He faces the death penalty.

China has suffered several such attacks this year, many by knife-wielding assailants targeting nurseries and schools. Fears over copycat attacks have led the government to limit coverage about the assaults.

The attacks have prompted an increase in public security and calls for more attention to be paid to mental health problems.
