Chris Patten: Let universities set unlimited tuition fees

Universities should be free to charge students unlimited tuition fees, the Chancellor of Oxford said today.

Lord Patten said that lifting the £3,225-a-year cap on tuition fees would allow universities to cover their costs for teaching expensive courses.

Speaking at the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, Lord Patten said he would be prepared to limit the money Oxford receives from the Government towards the cost of teaching if the university could charge "whatever tuition fee we wanted".

Ministers have launched a review of undergraduate fees, led by former BP boss Lord Browne.
